Driver age requirements specify the age range in which vehicles are rented. The supplier sets these requirements for the renter and additional drivers. Age requirements may differ by the country where the car is rented and by car type. Rental outside the specified driver age range is either not allowed or special fees apply (e.g., young and senior driver fees).
For example, an 18-year-old driver might be able to rent a car from one supplier’s rental desk in Italy, but not from the same supplier’s desk in Sweden. Luxury and special vehicles (e.g., sports cars) are usually rented for drivers from the age of 21 or 25. Vehicles are often not rented to drivers under the age of 18 and a young driver fee might apply to drivers in the age range of 18 to 25.
In addition to young drivers, age requirements may specify the maximum age for rental. Renters older than the specified age either cannot rent at all or have to pay a senior driver fee. Maximum age requirements are less common than minimum age requirements and they usually affect drivers who are 70 or older.
