Additional driver in car rental

In car rental, an additional driver can be any person who is registered and permitted to drive the rental car during the rental period in addition to the renter. For registering an additional driver, most suppliers, such as Hertz and Alamo, charge an additional driver fee. However, some suppliers allow the renter’s spouse and immediate family members to be registered as additional drivers for free.

As for rental conditions, additional drivers have to meet the same requirements as the renter. This includes the requirements to their driving licence and age. To be eligible to drive the rental car, additional drivers’ names must be added to the rental agreement.

It is also important to note that all additional drivers must be approved by the supplier.

Example sentence(s):
  • You can add additional drivers to the rental agreement when you pick up the vehicle.
  • Immediate family members can be registered as additional drivers free of charge.
