A robotaxi is a self-driving car that operates as a taxi within an e-hailing service. It has no driver, and passengers request rides via a smartphone application.
Waymo was among the first companies to offer fully driverless robotaxi rides to the public in a US city, beginning in Phoenix in 2020. As of 2025, it provides driverless services in several metropolitan areas, including Phoenix, San Francisco, Los Angeles and Austin, where passengers can book rides through its app and travel without a human driver on board. The service is now being expanded to include motorway travel in some markets.
