Local driving permit

A local driving permit is a document that a visitor may need in certain countries in order to drive legally. For example, in Sri Lanka foreign drivers must obtain a permit (often called a recognition or temporary driving permit) in addition to their national driving licence or an IDP. Sometimes you may be able to obtain this permit on arrival or when picking up the rental vehicle, while at other times you will need to secure it from a designated office in advance.

Sometimes you may be able to obtain this permit for an additional fee when collecting the rental vehicle. In other cases, you might need to obtain it from a designated location before pick-up.

Example sentence(s):
  • If you are not a citizen of the rental country, you are allowed to drive with your national driving licence for up to five days after the date of entry into the rental country. In order to be allowed to drive after that, you must obtain a temporary local driving permit of the rental country.
  • If you do not have an International Driving Permit, you must obtain a local driving permit. The permit is available locally for a fee.
